BRD launches SHABUKA: A bold bet on women entrepreneurs

BRD launched SHABUKA to help women-led and women-owned businesses access affordable loans and practical business support. The facility responds to persistent barriers including high interest rates, collateral requirements and limited tailored advisory services.

Eligible businesses must be at least 51% women-owned or led by a woman in the most senior position. They should be SMEs generating at least RWF 500 million annually and operating in a BRD priority sector.

SHABUKA offers loans from RWF 500 million to RWF 2 billion at 12% annual interest, with 15% collateral and a 10% equity contribution. The facility is designed to give businesses time and room to grow while repaying gradually.

Eligible businesses can email shabuka@brd.rw or call 3288.

Growing businesses, confidence and futures with Kataza

Kataza is led by BRD with the Mastercard Foundation and strategic partners to expand access to finance and strengthen the capacity of young people and women, particularly in agriculture, tourism and hospitality.

Through SACCOs and microfinance institutions, Kataza provides pay-as-you-harvest loans at 9% annual interest. Chance Izereyesu received a FRW 600,000 loan with a nine-month repayment period to rent land, hire labour and buy inputs.

She expects 1.2 tons of maize, nearly four times her previous yield, and her farm has created five permanent jobs. Marie Louise Uwingeneye and her husband used a FRW 1 million loan to expand their farm and expect production to rise from 1.5 to three tons.

The programme also includes Journey of Transformation sessions that support shared household and business decision-making, property rights awareness and recognition of each family member's contribution.

Minuza Festival debuts on Huye campus

The first Minuza Festival brought BRD services directly to students at the University of Rwanda and Rwanda Polytechnic campuses in Huye under the theme Roots of Impact.

BRD, the Higher Education Council, NIDA, NESA and Airtel Rwanda created a one-stop service centre where students resolved living-allowance issues, signed contracts, corrected personal data and received guidance on study loans.

The festival complements minuza.brd.rw, where students can track loan status, sign contracts, verify enrolment details and review loan history. BRD announced that the festival will become an annual initiative rotating across campuses nationwide.

The day concluded with cultural and music performances, combining practical service delivery with a renewed relationship between BRD and Rwanda's student community.
